What is the rehabilitation concept behind Synergy Therapeutic Systems?
We saw a need in the market. Too many injuries were treated using exercise cords that were “cheap”, painful to the grip, and not as functional as they ought to be. Also, instructions were poorly presented. We entered the market to improve on the cords function, comfort of use, and create a package easy for the patient to understand and easy for the practitioner to implement.
How much space is needed to implement a successful rehab program?
A 6’ x 6’ actual space is needed. Many facilities install in an 8 x 10 room, or an open
Suggestion: Mirrors are recommended especially in tight quarters where perceived space is beneficial. Mirrors are useful for patient assessment.

What sets Synergy apart from other rehab companies?
Besides providing the optimal comfort in cords and highest standards of hand-welded chrome plated functional wall stations… Paths to recovery are easier to follow then they are visible and easily understood by patients. Synergy’s primary focus when developing products and protocols were based around patient compliance. Synergy’s 3 Phase Educational program is laid out for patients to gain a deep understanding on their 6-8 week in office exercise journey. Colorful posters, illustrated booklets, tracking sheets, and colorful 3 phase exercise sheets are all part of the necessary progressive process. This makes it easier for both the staff and patient to establish short and long term goals ultimately improving compliance by showing the patients their road map to recovery.
Synergy has 3 Shoulder Exercise Kits. Why? What are the differences?
The 3 different shoulder rehab kits titled Rotator Cuff, Frozen Shoulder, and The Shoulder.
The rotator cuff protocol isolates specific stretching and strengthening exercises for the 4 rotator cuff muscles and exercises target the shoulder girdle to improve scapular rhythm and stability to the shoulder girdle. Ideal for patients who have inhibited and/or weakened rotator cuff musculature and scapular instability: 1 phase of stretching and 2 phases of strengthening exercises is implemented.
The Frozen shoulder has 2 stretching phases and 1 phase of strengthening. Phase 1 and 2 stretching emphasis on the capsule to gain range of motion, increase circulation while reducing the common sharp pain that accompanies frozen shoulder. Phase 3 strengthens the rotator cuff musculature and restores function to both the shoulder girdle and scapular rhythm. Exercise isolates mid and low trap and includes serrates anterior work.
The Shoulder program is general shoulder exercise program for overall exercises for the entire shoulder region including the deltoids.
COMPLETE REHABILITATION SYSTEMS QUESTIONS:
Yes. From mounting the Synergy Stations to step-by-step instructions of every exercise on ‘real-time’ DVDs presented and executed by the top physical therapists shot on location at Florida Hospital. Colorful wall charts, colorful tear-off pads, illustrated booklets, and a comprehensive implementation CD reference manual is provided. The CD includes: flow charts, CPT billing codes selection, testing, and treatment strategies taking patients from the acute response phase, the sub-acute and through the remodeling phase. A DVD titled “Is Rehab For Me?” for patient viewing helps bridge passive and active care essential for building a successful rehabilitation experience for the patient.
An average 8 x 10 room is large enough to successfully implement a Complete Synergy Rehabilitation Center. Mirrors are recommended to add perceived space and to allow patients to view their exercise posture. The equipment takes up no floor space and is mounted and stored on the wall. Patients stand 2 1/2’ to 3 ½’ from the wall and then move an extremity. An average patient requires 4’ width and 6’ depth to exercise with the Synergy products. Stabilization balls require 6’ square of space.
Synergy offers 3 different Complete Systems, What are the basic differences between the Systems?
Our 3 systems include the Complete Spine System, the Total Body System, and the Comprehensive System.
If facilities focus on the Spine (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar region), the Complete Spine System is ideal. Other areas can be added to the system at time of purchase, or when the needs arise. For example: If a knee patient needs rehab, simply order the Knee Rehab Kit. We’ll ship it within 24 hours. The kit with have the necessary product (which mounts to either the station and/or door jam), wall chart, tracking chart, and ‘real time’ 3 phase DVD.
If facilities focus on the spine and extremities (shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, ankle, and wrist), then the Complete Total Body System is recommended.
If a facility wishes to add to the Total Body System with specific injury protocols (whiplash, kyphosis, osteoporosis, weight management, frozen shoulder, rotator cuff) and have Spanish speaking patients, then the Comprehensive System is available.
Suggestion: Individual patient kits (such as frozen shoulder, whiplash, etc.) are available to order anytime.
What is the difference between Cervical and whiplash kit?
The whiplash program encompasses both the cervical and thoracic region.
Do you suggest adding a 22cm ball to the cervical kit?
Absolutely yes. Isometrics are implemented in the 2nd phase. The ball is ideal to use during this phase because it is soft to the touch and can be slightly deflated as patients’ progress through the phase. A gradual deflation of the ball allows controlled and minimal movement to occur. The less air in the ball, the more cervical movement occurs. This allows patients a gradual transition out of isometrics.
What is the difference between kyphosis and whiplash?
Kyphosis and whiplash have similar protocols targeting the cervical and thoracic region. The whiplash protocol has a few more exercises utilizing the cervical headgear.
Which kit is best for tension headache?
The Synergy Cervical Kit is recommended. Tension headaches are often caused by muscle tension. The closest muscles to the headache involve 6 rectus capitis. These muscles often become hypotonic and sensitive. The origin of these muscles goes straight into posterior base of the head. Other tightness and imbalances in the cervical- thoracic region should be addressed including the upper trap and levator scapulae. Weak muscles should also be strengthened to help restore balance. The Synergy Cervical Kit addresses, stretches, and strengthens imbalances to help restore function and reduce overall stress to the cervical region.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Can you give me an idea of how Synergy is implemented in a typical office?
Synergy provides muscle tests to document muscle weakness and restricted ROM.
Patients can work through a 6-8 week in-office rehab plan implementing Synergy’s 3-phase progressive program. 2 weeks per phase.
PHASE 1: Increase ROM (stretching phase
PHASE 2 & 3: Progressive strengthening
Suggestion: Muscle test 3 times: Prior to rehab, 30 days later, and before dismissal.
Examples of exercise protocols for cervical, thoracic, and lumbar regions:
Cervical: There are 3 phases in the cervical program. Stretching is phase 1. We stretch the muscles that are most often tight in the cervical region including the upper trapezius, levator scapular, rectus capitis group, and the 3 cervical scalenes. Isometrics are done in phase 2 utilizing an inflatable ball (inflate the ball hard for no motion… as patients progress. Slowly reduce air volume allowing more head motion when pushing against the ball). Resistance is added in phase 3 using the cervical headgear with resistance cords in multiple directions including rotation and retraction to reach all the essential neck musculature including the deep flexor and paraspinals. Our headgear maintains a comfortable fit, yet its patented dispersed grip secures any desired motion without headgear slippage.
Thoracic: There are 3 phases for the thoracic program with emphasis on isolating and strengthening the middle and lower trapezius and restoring rhythm to the shoulder girdle including serratus anterior strengthening.
Lumbar: 2 programs
Lumbar Program One (Core Power)- 3 phases utilizing a large stabilization ball. The ball is effective in rehabilitating the back because it adds an element of instability that one would not receive from the stable floor. The body responds to automatically (subcortically) to this instability essential in core development. When the core is developed, the spine is well protected. Enhanced proprioception help bulletproof the back.
Lumbar Program Two (The Lumbar)- 3 phases utilizing a Synergy Deluxe Cord. Phase one stretches the muscles often tight including the hamstrings, hip flexors, and piriformis. Phase two concentrates on proprioceptive exercises and getting muscles to fire quicker and when called upon to better protect the back. Posterior back muscles and close spine work is emphasized to help hold adjustments and help with spinal alignment (open spine work too early can encourage further slippage of disc(s)). Muscles strengthened include posterior low back musculature including erector spinae and multifidus. Phase 3 focuses on anterior core. Opening the spine and strengthens the oblique and abs with emphasis on core stability and hip control.
How do I use the ‘real time’ DVD’s?
The DVD’s can be utilized in your office to help patients and staff. The most common use is letting patients watch 1 phase 1 time and exercise right along with viewing. They will glance at a rep or 2, and then listen to the voice over instructions, advice, and tips. (Always have one-on-one with patients when billing 97530 or 97110.) On their 2nd visit, they can refer to wall charts and/or illustrated tear-off sheets. Use tracking chart to monitor progress. After 2 weeks (approximately 6 visits completed), have them start up on phase 2 by watching and exercising along with the phase. On their following visit, let them refer to wall charts.
Option 2: The DVD’s can be used by your staff to view and rehab one-on-one referring to exercise charts, booklets, and/or sheets.
Suggestion: With patients who have a ROM deficiency, let them continue to stretch both in the office and at home while continuing onto phase 2 in the office.
Suggestion: We recommend staff to watch the DVD and exercise along with the DVD. This way, they can experience and understand what new patients experience equipping them with better communication skills.
How do I implement Home Patient Kits in my office?
Patient kits are designed for using after the in-office rehabilitation program is completed. The reasons are multiple. Maintain compliance is key to patient recovery. If patients are compliant and make their office visits, they will achieve a regular exercise regimen. Regular exercise is a routine patients need to discover. After they complete rehab in the office (3 times a week for 6 to 8 weeks), they will be used to the routine of exercising in your office and need to seamlessly transfer that effort at home. At this time, prescribe, charge the patient, or give a home kit to them so they can continue this exercise habit developed in your office at home.
Helping patient stay committed to a lifelong habit of moving and exercising makes you ideal “go to” doctor in changing lifestyles and improving overall wellness. The home patient kits are available in individual unit and “order as you need” basis shipped immediately to you.
Do I give a home patient kit to patient, or bill the kit(s)?
Option #1
Use the home patient kit as a compliance builder and a referral marketing tool. Let the patient know, at the end of all the rehabilitation sessions, a patient kit will be there for them to use at home. Inform your patients that the office rehabilitation includes 3 series of progressive exercises (6-8 weeks) to train, evaluate, and progress towards optimal recovery. Goals will be focused on increasing ROM and strength. A decrease in overall pain and an improvement in function will be the mutual goal. Educated patience know that rehab and exercising does not stop when office visits stop. After successfully seeing the patent billing the insurance company 18 to 24 visits using 94110 or 97530 (generating over $1,000 just for the rehab alone, GIVE IT TO Her/Him! Watch your referral business pick up a tick!
Option #2
After the 6 to 8 weeks of in office is complete, charge the patient $50 to $100 for the patient kit. Let them know the importance of continuing exercising and that it is an investment in their future and lifestyle.
Option #3
Bill the insurance company with a letter of necessity (99070-A9033) stressing exercises will reduce the likelihood of reoccurrences reducing the overall office visits and treatment costs.
Option #4
For cash patients, create a total package including the rehabilitation sessions and Synergy Home patient kit. When completed in-office sessions, release the Synergy Home patient kit to continue what they have learned and their progress at home.
INSTALLATION & SYNERGY STATION USE
How do I install my System?
Our stations are mounted on variety of different wall structures. Many doctors either mount the station themselves, or done with a contractor/handyman.
Suggestion: We recommend mounting each station to a stud as close as possible. Most studs are either 16” or 24”. Patients do not have to stand in front of the mounted station and can move to either side when exercising. We recommend installing mirrors to each side. Patients can then angle and position themselves to one side of the station and exercise using the mirror to help assist proper body positioning. Mounting stations close allow more space for wall charts, mirrors, and other equipment.
Storage brackets (secure the balls and cords) can be mounted 6 ½ feet high. This allows space below for charts, mirrors, and other equipment. A high mounted storage bracket keeps ball up and out of the way. Also, with a flip of the wrist, the balls easily dismount for use.
General Mounting Instructions & suggestions:
3 pc Multi-Use Station: From far right to left, mount the bar that has the large sticker “STATION” to the far right approximately 6 to 9 inches from the floor.
Mounting the Triangle Bracket:
Mount the triangle bracket according to your rehab needs (to the left):
Option 1: If you anticipate doing a lot of knee and cardio work, then mount the triangle bracket approximately waist height or a slightly higher. (Approximately 42”)
Option 2: Thoracic exercises. Mount the triangle approximately 5 feet for mid to lower trap exercises with Synergy’s Double Deluxe Cord.
Option 3: Cervical Exercises. Mount the triangle to accommodate a seated patient (approximately 50” high from the floor). In a seated position, mount the triangle approximately at forehead height or slightly higher, which is approximately 50” depending upon the chair. An adjustable chair is recommended. (Patients can also stand to perform cervical exercises if they control swaying of their body)
Mount the 3rd bar that has the large sticker “SYNERGY” to the far left to closets stud (either 16” or 24”) from center of triangle) approximately 7’ to 7’3” high.
Mounting Stations onto wood, steel, or concrete:
Wood Studs: We supply the lug nuts to secure the station into wood. Simply line up the station with the studs (may need stud finder). Mark position of hole and pre-drill. (Supplied lag bolts are 5/16” and 2.5” in length. Each station lines up vertically to one stud.
Steel studs: Secure with toggle bolts (not included)
Concrete and/or brick: Secure with molly bolts (not included)
Mounting the Single Station: Mount approximately 9” to 12” from floor.
How do the stations adjust?
4” adjustability. Both the Synergy 3 pc Multi-Use Stations The Synergy Single Station uses the same mechanism for adjustability. There are hole set at 4” apart in the back of the pipe. Attach any Synergy products onto the oversized clamp.
(Note: Pipe, not tubing. Do not settle for the lessor priced tubing stations. Our stations are made of quality metal piping to withstand years of heavy use. Tubing may look functional, but tend to bend becoming misaligned, “sticky”, and difficult to adjust. Ours will adjust the same 10 years from the day of your purchase. Synergy Stations will make the easily adjust 4 inch increments for a lifetime!
To adjust, simply move the stem into the desired hole. Simple… Effective!
How do products mount on the station? And, how do they mount in a door?
Each Synergy Cord is universal. They mount both onto a Synergy Station, and/or in a door jam.
Synergy Station Mount: Attach the polypro loop through and onto the clamp
Door Jam Mount: Slip the bulky portion of the polypro strap (that is rolled up and stitched) through the side of the door on the hinge side. Shut and secure the door. You would not want anyone to open the door while you are exercising. The hinges help keep the mount from slipping.
